About the Cat Café

😺 what is a cat café?

A cat café is part café, part lounge, and part cat adoption center. There is a cat lounge area housing adoptable cats and a separate café/bar where you can purchase drinks and food.

😸 what do you do at a cat café?

Whatever you want! You can simply go and play with all of the (adoptable) cats, or you can play games, read books, take advantage of our free Wi-Fi, or grab food and a drink. We also host special events such as wine tastings and pairings, yoga with cats, trivia nights, tea parties, ghost story nights, etc.

🚸 are children allowed?

Children ages 5 and up are allowed in the cat lounge with adult supervision, with the exception of “Adult Swim” hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings from 6-close. Children under age 5 are not allowed in the cat room to ensure the safety of the children and the cats. All ages are welcome in the café downstairs.

We highly recommend that children have experience with cats as the cats reside here in a free-roaming environment.

There must be one adult per two children ages 12 and under.

Only 4 children ages 5-12 are permitted in the cat lounge at once.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 6-close is ages 18+ only.

💻 Are day or monthly passes available? What is included?

Yes! Day Passes and Monthly Passes can be booked via the “Book Your Visit” button at the top of the page.

Day Passes allow you to come and go during business hours for the day you purchased. You can stay for as long as you want, and you are free to leave and come back later in the day! *Please note, we do not sell day passes for weekend days due to limited capacity.

Monthly Passes allow you to come and go during business hours for 30 days, beginning on the first visit after purchase. If you have a monthly pass and are interested in a special event, please reach out and we can give you details. **If you plan to come in on a weekend, we recommend calling ahead so we can add you to the head count. We leave extra spaces open each hour for our monthly passers, but we can’t always accommodate all monthly passers at once.

Free Wi-Fi is available if you want to work from the cafe or lounge!

🤧 what if my significant other wants to come but i’m allergic to cats?

Many people have cat allergies but we have options! For example, if you wish to visit Mount Purrnon with another person or a group but are allergic, you can relax in our colonial-themed café area which is separated from the cats.

This part of the building has comfortable seating, access to food and drink, and the restroom. This area also has a separate entrance in the rear of the building so there is no need to walk through the cat area if undesired.

Our building is two floors and the main entrance to the cat café is on S Alfred Street which has two steps. There is an entrance in the rear of the building that is ADA accessible to the first floor. The first floor houses the restroom and café/wine bar. The cats have free reign on the second floor, as well as in an enclosure in the front window on the ground floor. Due to state requirements, the cats must be on the second floor. There is no elevator access to the second floor.

IS YOUR BUsiness ada ACCESSIBLE?

The Cats

🐈 can i bring my own cat?

Unfortunately no, but we have plenty of cats to enjoy!

🐈 how many cats do you have?

Typically 20-25 at any given time.

😺 are the cats up for adoption?

Yes! The cats are provided by rescues. All cats are up to date on shots, microchipped, and are spayed/neutered.

If you are interested in adopting one of our resident cats, you can apply. For more information on adopting, please see the “Adopt” page.

The rescue will review your application and forward it to us if it is approved. We review it to make sure you have been in to meet the cat, and that the cat is a good fit for your home. Typically, you will hear from us or the rescue in about 24-48 hours. Additional paperwork or clarifications may be necessary and may delay the adoption process.

Please read Fancy Cats’ adoption policies before applying (Cat Adoption Policies (fancycats.org)).

All adoption fees go directly to the rescue to transport, vaccinate, spay/neuter, and provide any other medical care for the animals.

The adoption fees:

  • One Cat (ages 6 mo - 7 years) - $200

  • One Cat (ages 8+) - $100

  • Two Cats under 7 years - $300

  • Fee Sponsored Cats are free to an approved adopter

Please note, we do not “hold” cats. If you are interested in a cat, but cannot bring them home within a week, we cannot guarantee that cat will be available when you are ready. Because there are always cats that need to be pulled from kill shelters, we like to make room for new cats as soon as we can.

🐈 I AM INTERESTED IN ADOPTING. WHAT NEXT?

No young kittens. Our cats range in age, with the youngest being 6 months. We purposefully do not house kittens here, as our focus is rescuing cats that have been overlooked, often sitting in cages for long periods of time. Kittens have no problem getting adopted; we are trying to help the ones that need to shine!

🐈 do you Have any kittens?

With some notable exceptions such as the Middle East and the Caribbean, most of our cats come from shelters in southern Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

Prior to ending up in shelters, the cats have a variety of backgrounds; many were strays and found outdoors. Others were owner surrenders or ended up in shelters after their owners passed away or could no longer take care of them.

At Mount Purrnon, they have a comfortable and safe place to hang out and play until they get adopted.

🐈 where do the cats come from?

🐈 how long does it take for the cats to get adopted typically?

Median time in the café is around 3 weeks but we have had some cats take 6 months + to get adopted while others were here for less than a day.

🐈 can i surrender my cat to you?

We do not take cats directly. If you have found a cat or need to surrender a cat, please contact the rescue at info@fancycats.org. Please be aware they get requests from all over and may not have space to take any new cats.

 Food & Drink

🍷🍺 do you really serve wine and beer?

We also offer desserts that are gluten-free. These are pre-packaged before they are brought in to Mount Purrnon.
